The Center for Equity and Excellence in Teaching and Learning invites eligible lecturer faculty, tenured/tenure track faculty and graduate teaching assistants to join colleagues across campus for a two-day First Year Pedagogies for Inclusive Excellence (FY-PIE) Institute.
When is First Year PIE served?
Date: May 30-31
Location: LIB 121 (and breakout rooms)
Lunch, refreshments and pie will be provided.
Why First Year PIE?
Within a supportive community of colleagues who teach first year students, participants will reaffirm a commitment to the reflective and iterative critical practice of fostering equity, excellence, and inclusiveness in the pursuit of social justice to support student success.
During these two days, you and your colleagues will:
- build community;
- explore campus initiatives and resources;
- apply theories on inclusive pedagogy to practice through active learning strategies;
- create authentic and personally meaningful teaching artifacts for own courses; and
- reflect on teaching and learning within a framework of critical praxis.
Who is eligible for First Year PIE?
Instructors of record (lecturer faculty, T/TT faculty or graduate teaching associates) who are currently teaching, or assigned to teach within the next academic year, one or more of the following courses are eligible to participate:
Area A1: Oral Communication
Area A2: Written English Communication
Area A3: Critical Thinking
Area B4: Quantitative Reasoning
Area E: First Year Experience, Life-long Learning & Self-Development
Will I be compensated for First Year PIE?
All eligible participants who complete the First Year PIE Institute will receive $500. Further, completion of this two-day institute is the first step towards obtaining an optional Certificate in Equity and Excellence in Teaching First Year Students, for which additional compensation will be provided.
