Faculty Outing: Ride to the Redwoods
Overview
Hop on the Redwoods Ride to Adventure!
On Saturday, September 27, 2025, join us for a Faculty Outing to the majestic old-growth redwoods of Sam McDonald Park, between La Honda and Loma Mar.
The park honors Sam McDonald (1884–1957). At a time when Black people were barred from purchasing land in this region, Sam defied those barriers, creating a welcoming retreat for friends, students, and community members. After his passing, the land transferred to San Mateo County and, in 1970, became Sam McDonald County Park, preserving his vision of access and belonging.
Hosted by CEETL in partnership with the Save the Redwoods League, this outing will have optional offerings:
- A guided interpretive walk exploring the forest’s ecology and history lead by a local San Mateo County Park Ranger
- An optional mindful meditation session among the redwoods
Come celebrate Sam McDonald’s extraordinary legacy and experience the beauty and meaning of this remarkable park.
