Join a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Teaching Square

CEETL invites faculty to join a Fall 2026 UDL 3.0 Teaching Square, a collaborative learning community designed for faculty across disciplines to explore how Universal Design for Learning can support more accessible and inclusive teaching.

The UDL Teaching Square is the final component of CEETL’s Return of JEDI Certificate Series and is open to the first 20 participants. Faculty who complete Return of JEDI Slice 1 + Slice 2 + the Teaching Square will earn the Return of JEDI Certificate. Participants may enroll in only one JEDI Teaching Square. A stipend is available for 10 hours of learning.

Rather than focusing on implementing UDL all at once, participants will identify a specific aspect of their teaching they would like to explore or strengthen. Drawing on the UDL framework, faculty will reflect on the needs of their students, set an individual goal for their teaching practice, and experiment with strategies for reducing barriers and expanding opportunities for student learning and participation.

Faculty will meet in small Teaching Squares to share goals, practices, and reflections; learn from one another’s approaches; and consider how UDL principles can be applied in different courses and disciplines. Participants will complete a brief self-assessment at the beginning of the process and share an example of their teaching practice with other members of their square, either through a class visit or shared course materials. The emphasis is on collegial reflection and experimentation; not evaluation of one another’s teaching.

Throughout the Teaching Square, participants will use a simple UDL* inquiry cycle as a guide:

• Reflect: Where are students encountering barriers in my course?
• Identify: What aspect of UDL might help address those barriers?
• Investigate: What teaching strategies could put that principle into practice?
• Teach: What might this look like in my own course?
• Assess: What am I noticing about student learning, participation, or engagement?
• Reflect: What worked, what did I learn, and what might I change next?

All faculty at any level of familiarity with UDL are welcome. However, only faculty who have already completed Return of JEDI Slice 1 + Slice 2 are eligible for a stipend. 

The UDL Teaching Square is a CEETL initiative in collaboration with the SFSU Inclusion Program and is supported by a grant from the California Center for Inclusive College (CCIC).
